Does anyone here remember when this guy used to be a marketing tool all by himself for fans of the indie scene? I seem to recall the poster of a film called “The Last Life in the Universe” (from Thailand?) touting Doyle as the cinematographer… Like he was the star of the movie somehow.

But that was at the turn of the century and since then, the world hasn’t heard too much of Doyle. Still, his resume is an impressive selection of independent snobbery. Of course working with Wong Kar-Wai isn’t going to hurt your street cred… But he’s also done films like “Rabbit-Proof Fence,” “Red Rose White Rose,” “Made,” “Paranoid Park,” and more recently and quietly (and I’m sure regrettably), Shyamalan’s “Lady in the Water.”

I always thought that Doyle had game and I liked the fact that movies were being sold on the strength of their cinematographer’s name. But he was someone that I hadn't heard from in recent years. This weekend I looked him up and to my surprise:

He’s doing the new Jarmusch flick!

Or perhaps far more importantly, THERE’S A NEW JARMUSCH FLICK. Check out the trailer… It looks reminiscent of his “Ghost Dog” flick in that it may be more suitable to the mainstream with some cool, professional action sequences. Oh, and it’s rated “R” for “graphic nudity.” The chick with the glasses there, I bet.
Needless to say, I am all over this shit.

Oh, and speaking of independent snobbery, Jarmusch is using Doyle for the first time in his career… His long time DP, Robby Muller (there’s supposed to be two little dots above the “u”… I don’t know how to type that) is practically the name in cinematography for pretentious, geeky art-house film. Check out his credits if you're one of those who is unfamiliar.

Join the club... Samurai style is the only way to kill someone. Trust me, I know...

Speaking of Jarmusch, anyone seen "Fishing with John"? It's hilarious... John Lurie and Jim Jarmusch go hunting for sharks, it's classic... Almost as classic as Lurie and Willem Dafoe's ice fishing. Ahhh... good times.
