I’m staring at this word processor screen feeling completely blank.
It’s not as though I believe that I have nothing to say. I’ve been in a fair amount of emotional flux of late; there are things happening in life. But I don’t know how to express any of it.
I think maybe I’ve become to accustomed to writing out my cynicisms, fears, and personal triumphs into the words and situations of characters in my creative writing. It’s where a lot of me is going right now (one of the afore mentioned “thi…

Does anyone here remember when this guy used to be a marketing tool all by himself for fans of the indie scene? I seem to recall the poster of a film called “The Last Life in the Universe” (from Thailand?) touting Doyle as the cinematographer… Like
he was the star of the movie somehow.
But that was at the turn of the century and since then, the world hasn’t heard too much of Doyle. Still, his resume is an impressive selection of independent snobbery. Of course working with Wong Kar-Wai i…

Is this an appropriate forum to discuss such things? I care not.
I decided a while back that I was going to use this blog as a tool to do what I’ve never been
able/given the opportunity to do, and that is to reveal myself bare (no pictures of my nudity, of course; those are merely available on a “by request” basis). The purpose, aside from being able to express things that I normally never get a chance to, is actually practical. The better you know who I am, the more accurately you can j…

I’ll do my best to describe it. It’s not very long.
I’m sitting on a couch watching television and in between programs (I know nothing of either one); there is an animated Canadian short. For those of you unfamiliar with what this entails, I offer the following:
The Cat Came Back

Every Dog’s Guide to the Playground

Hey everyone. A little inactivity on the site as we recover from our trip to the Freakshow Film Festival, but I assure all we are finally back into full swing. No rest for the relativity mild, I suppose.
Jason and I are in the midst of reviewing every film we screened at the festival (many of which have yet to be picked up, which is only a matter of time for some of them, as the event was chock-full of great flicks).
George Clark's "Battle of the Bone" won the Audience Choice award, and was ex…

And that's what you're going to see here. Horror, horror, horror. Even from this cat here who tries not to tie himself to a single genre. Coming up are reviews for "[Rec]" "Pontypool" "The Midnight Meat Train" and "Let the Right One In." As well as some DVD goodness like Uwe Boll's "Seed" and a couple of surprises this should be the best October we've ever had on Critical-Film. Oh yeah, there's also that little festival thing in Orlando...
I'm looking forward to all the work ahead of us here, a…

After looking forward to the Edmonton Film Fest for some time, my excitement as it turns out, has been for naught. Not only was my pass mishandled by the offices there (and by mishandled, I mean completely lost), but after being told “someone must have bumbled it up” they refused to SELL me a pass as well. “I’m sorry sir. All of our passes are sold out.” But I can wait in line and cross my fingers that I’ll get in, right? Piss on that.
So, end result? I’m only going to see the bare minimum of m…

“10, 000 Empire readers, 150 of Hollywood’s finest and 50 key film critics voted in the most ambitious movie poll ever attempted.”
Now I could go through that list and comment on a plethora of movies that they left off in lieu of garbage cinema (the first page you click on reveals that “Saw” and “Superman Returns” belong on this list), but doing that would only mean that I would have to put some sort of thought and effort into something which you can probably a…

There is a culture that has grown, mainly on the Internet I assume, of violent negative backlash towards Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”
I won’t go too in-depth, but I thought that I should recognize this restless viewpoint as well as the viewpoint mentioned in my actual review. I didn’t give the nay-sayers enough nay-say it seems. Here are just a few examples:

The title of the site is self-explanatory. Lots of good links here, content and debate.

I have been saturating myself with cinema this summer, and have been impressed by most of what I've seen. I didn't feel as though many pictures were worth commenting on in a review, but here's a short rundown of a few of the more popular films that I have glazed over.
Get Smart
It's good, not great... But it didn't piss me off like it probably should have. Carrell is a good choice to play Maxwell Smart, and the movie wisely avoids the big laughs, going more for some of the silly cha…

I have stated for many years now, after my Coen-infatuation died down near the turn of the century that Tom DiCillo is my favorite filmmaker currently working in cinema. For years, he has struggled to get funding for his pictures (which is crazy to me) and my focus went on to other minds. “Double Whammy” was a bit of a disappointment to me. It seemed compromised, like it was trying to hard to be a crowd-pleaser, and that is something that I had never seen in his work before. That’s not to s…

After just a few short blog posts, I have disappeared. I have neglected this particular column like an unwanted pet or stale girlfriend. My apologies to anyone who cares (there should be many of you).
My focus of late has been two-fold. I have been bettering myself health-wise (which has been wholly successful thus far), and I have also been writing a film of mine that has been in the works for in and around eight years now. It must have been fate that has allowed me to put off writing it…

I watched an old Nick Cage flick the other day called "Valley Girl" and days later, I still don't know what to make of it.
It is marketed in the same vein as other teen flicks of the eighties which made me believe that it was going to be flighty and without substance, but at the same time would charm me with its music and its attitude. The film still had the same aesthetic attributes as I expected, but also contained scenes that I am shocked by. If you haven't yet seen "Valley Girl" and wi…

I just finished watching “The French Connection” for the first time since I was about thirteen. I remember back then how it wrestled me down forcefully and nailed me to the floor, and it had a similar effect on me tonight. It is a remarkable feat considering that: A) I had seen the picture before; and: B) I misplaced the remote to my DVD player two days ago, and have been watching everything in bed since then on my little portable machine and a set of earplug headphones. It’s a great film.
